What Causes the LES to Malfunction?

  1. Dietary Habits: Certain foods and beverages can trigger heartburn by relaxing the LES. These include spicy foods, fatty or fried foods, chocolate, coffee, alcohol, and acidic foods like citrus fruits and tomatoes.
  2. Overeating: Eating large meals can put pressure on the LES, causing it to open and allow acid into the esophagus. Eating smaller, more frequent meals can help avoid this.
  3. Obesity: Excess body weight puts additional pressure on the stomach and LES, making it more likely for stomach acid to back up into the esophagus.
  4. Smoking: Cigarette smoke contains chemicals that can weaken the LES, increasing the risk of heartburn.
  5. Pregnancy: During pregnancy, the growing fetus can put pressure on the stomach, which can lead to heartburn.
