How Do You Know if Diamonds Are Real?

In the world of precious stones, diamonds hold a place of esteem not only for their stunning beauty but also for their remarkable durability. However, with the proliferation of synthetic diamonds and other high-quality imitations, discerning the authenticity of a diamond has become a topic of keen interest for both enthusiasts and potential buyers.

Visual Inspection with a Loupe

Jewellers use a loupe—a small magnification device—to inspect gemstones closely. Real diamonds have unique characteristics that are difficult to replicate perfectly. Synthetic diamonds tend to be flawless, which, ironically, can be a sign that they are not natural.

The Water Test

One of the simplest tests to perform at home is the water test. Simply fill a glass with water and gently drop the diamond into the glass. Due to their high density, real diamonds will sink to the bottom quickly. If the stone floats at the surface or hovers in the middle of the glass, it’s likely not a real diamond.

The Fog Test

Real diamonds disperse heat rapidly. To perform the fog test, hold the diamond in front of your mouth and exhale onto it, creating a fog. If the fog dissipates right away, the diamond is real. If the fog lingers for a few seconds before clearing, the stone may be fake. This test relies on the stone’s thermal conductivity and can be an easy at-home method.

The UV Light Test

Many natural diamonds will show a blue fluorescence when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, although the absence of fluorescence does not necessarily mean the diamond is fake. If you have access to a UV light, place the diamond under it and look for a blue glow. Be aware that not all real diamonds fluoresce, and some synthetic ones might, so use this test as part of a broader assessment.

The Heat Test

Diamonds are incredibly resilient and have high heat resistance. To perform the heat test, carefully heat the stone for about 30 seconds before dropping it into cold water. A real diamond will not be affected by the sudden temperature change. However, many synthetic materials will crack or shatter under these conditions. Exercise caution with this test to avoid injury or damage to the stone.

Professional Appraisal

While the above methods can provide initial insights, the most reliable way to determine if a diamond is real is through a professional appraisal. Certified gemologists use specialised equipment to assess diamonds accurately. They look at aspects such as refractive index, weight, and detailed examination of internal characteristics that are not visible to the untrained eye.


Determining the authenticity of a diamond involves a combination of techniques, from simple at-home tests to professional evaluations. While these methods can offer valuable indicators, consulting with a certified gemologist or jeweller is recommended for a conclusive verification.
